It would be great to work out without having to drive across town. That’s why you’ve decided to convert the basement into a home gym. While you can’t outfit the gym with everything right this minute, you can include enough features to make the space functional. Here are four of the essentials you will need first.

Choosing the Right Flooring

Flooring is important when it comes to workout spaces. There is more than one type of gym flooring and you want to choose one that provides the features necessary to make the space efficient. For example, interlocking wood foam tiles are a great solution. They are easy to install, provide the right type of support for your workouts, and will be easy to keep clean.

You can also consider an interlocking foam pad for one area of your home gym. These pads provide cushioning for activities like jumping rope, doing sit-ups, and other basic exercises.

How About Some Mirrors?

Mirrors in a home gym are practical in more ways than one. In a basement space, they help to amplify the lighting so the space does not seem cold or too enclosed. You can also put those mirrored walls to good use by watching yourself as you work out. Doing so will help you determine if your movements are correct, or if you need to change something about how you perform a certain type of exercise. Observation helps you improve your performance and could prevent you from doing something that causes a physical injury.

A Set of Dumbbells

A quality set of dumbbells is ideal for anyone who is just beginning to get back into the habit of lifting weights. The right set will begin with light weights you can use to begin toning and building muscles. They also come in handy when you are doing simple exercises like arm and leg lifts. Consider investing in a set that begins with five-pound weights and goes up to 45 or 50 pounds. Even after you buy more equipment, you will still find plenty of ways to incorporate those dumbbells into your workouts.

A Set of Weights and a Bench

A weight bench, a bar, and a set of basic free weights is also something you should invest in early on. It’s possible to perform more exercises with a bench than many people realize. You can use if for building the muscles in your arms, chest, and stomach. There are even ways to use the weights and bench to tone and build leg muscles and tighten your stomach.

Remember that the goal is to outfit the new home gym so you can begin using it immediately.  If the space looks a little sparse at first, that’s fine. As you go along, it will be easy to add resistance machines, elliptical trainers curling bars, and all sorts of other equipment. You’ll know it’s time to add something new to the gym as your strength and endurance increase.
