Protein Shakes

When you are undergoing intensive workouts such as CrossFit, it’s important to give your body enough protein to help you perform at your best and have the energy to keep going for the rest of the day without feeling hungry.

If you are working out first thing in the morning, try one of these protein shakes for breakfast to set you up for the day and help your muscles recover from the training. Or have one post workout to build up your energy levels and support those aching limbs.

Spinach and blueberry shake

  • A cup of coconut milk
  • A banana
  • Half a cup of blueberries
  • One and a half cups of spinach
  • A quarter of a cup of pumpkin seeds
  • A scoop of protein powder – this one from Focus Performance is a good healthy option.

You will need to chop the banana and tear the spinach leaves first, before adding all of the ingredients into your blender. Then just blend everything together – you can add more coconut milk to get the consistency right and then serve over ice to taste.

This smoothie is filled with protein, vitamins and easy to digest carbohydrates. The seeds and the spinach provide vitamins and minerals while the blueberries are packed with antioxidants. This is the perfect post CrossFit workout shake.

Almond and honey shake

  • One teaspoon of honey
  • A quarter of a cup of almonds
  • One banana
  • Half a cup of blueberries
  • A cup of almond milk
  • A scoop of protein powder

You will need to chop the banana and make sure the almonds are not in shells, before adding all of the ingredients to the blender. Whizz the ingredients together until thoroughly mixed and in a smooth consistency, before serving over ice to taste.

If you are working out first thing in the morning then go for this shake which contains almonds which have high levels of vitamin E and good fats. It provides a great boost of protein to help your body perform at its best.

Pineapple and kiwi shake

  • A cup of chopped pineapple
  • A chopped kiwi
  • A cup of coconut milk
  • A scoop of protein powder

This one will take a little more preparation if you are using fresh fruit, which will give the best results – so you will need to peel and chop both the pineapple and the kiwi. You can use frozen or tinned fruit for convenience but avoid tinned fruit with added syrup or sugar.

Add the fruit and all the other ingredients to the blender and make sure everything is well combined before serving over ice. You can add more coconut milk to create a thinner drink if you need to, or add some water.

Instead of going for orange juice in the morning, try this high protein shake which also features your daily dose of vitamin C – it makes a great addition to any breakfast but particularly if you are heading out for an intensive CrossFit session.

Strawberry morning shake

  • One cup of almond milk
  • One banana
  • One cup of strawberries
  • One scoop of protein powder

You will need to peel and chop the banana and remove all leaves and stalks from the strawberries in preparation for making this shake. If the strawberries are large you might need to halve them to make the blending process easier.

Add the fruit and the other ingredients to the blender and make sure everything is properly combined and smooth before serving over ice. Add extra almond milk or water to thin out the shake if need be.

The strawberries and almond milk make this shake high in calcium and it is a great high protein but low-calorie shake option. Have this alongside your regular breakfast and you will be set up for the rest of the day.

Chocolate and strawberry shake

  • A tablespoon of chia seeds
  • Half a teaspoon of vanilla
  • A tablespoon of raw cacao powder
  • A cup of strawberries
  • Two teaspoons of almond butter
  • A cup of almond milk
  • A scoop of protein powder

Not much preparation needed to make this shake – simply combine all of the ingredients into the blender after removing any leaves and stalks from the strawberries. Blend together and serve.

This shake contains a lot of calcium so perfect for helping to support your bones as well as your muscles post workout. It is a substantial and rich recipe which is great for a post-workout recovery drink, or just a fabulous breakfast choice.

If you are an avid CrossFit enthusiast then these shakes are perfect for you, either to give you energy in the morning before your workout, or as a post-workout recovery drink. The high protein and low-calorie nature of these drinks mean they will set you up for the whole day no matter what you have planned.
