The prostate starts out as a small gland, but as we get older it can change significantly, and our quality of life may change with it. For men over 50, the most common prostate problem is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), which is a fancy way of saying “enlarged prostate” (older men are also at risk for prostate cancer, but it is not near as common as BPH).

A great deal of men in their 40’s and 50’s beginning to experience changes in their toilet habits, such as needing to go more often, having a poorer urine flow, or not emptying the bladder completely. You may also see that you’re needing to go more frequently in the middle of the night also. Below all you need to know about prostate care.

Prostate Care: Common Prostate Problems

Prostate disease. Prostate health is obviously a thing just a man has to be worried about, and as we age the probability of having complications only grow. Prostate cancer, Prostatitis and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) are all common conditions that affect millions of men at some time in their lives.

As men age, not only do their testosterone levels decrease but the levels of estrogen tend to increase, leading to an imbalance thought to be a major factor in BPH and prostate cancer.  By introducing phytoestogens which bind to estrogen receptors, best prostate supplements decrease estrogen levels in the body, helping to restore hormonal balance and prostate health.

Another contributing factor for prostate problems as we get older is Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which can cause tissue growth around the urethra, leading to urinary problems.  It’s been observed that guys with BPH tend to accumulate excess amounts of DHT in the prostate as they get older, but men who don’t produce DHT don’t develop BPH.

Of these, BPH is by far the most common, causing an enlargement of the prostate gland, which puts pressure on the urethra and blocks the flow of urine. As a result of this pressure, the bladder has to use more power to get rid of urine, slowly becoming more powerful and more sensitive, over-compensating even when only a little bit of urine is present, leading to the frequent desire to urinate.

Over time, the urethra becomes too narrow to the bladder to fully empty, resulting in an increased risk of bladder disease – not to mention a whole host of annoying, inconvenient, and embarrassing symptoms that accompany BPH, for example:

  • Urinary flow is apparently slow or weak
  • Sensation of bladder not completely emptying
  • Difficulty beginning urination
  • Frequent urination, sometimes just minutes apart
  • Urgent need to urinate
  • Frequent urination after going to bed
  • Starting and stopping of the urinary stream
  • Straining to urinate
  • Continued leaking after urinating

Prostatitis, a disease of the prostate gland, can cause painful urination or ejaculation, blood in the urine, pain in the groin or lower back, and even fever with chills.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer can exhibit a number of the same symptoms as BPH and prostatitis, and really, these three states are closely related. This is the reason it’s so important to take preventative steps to keep your prostate in a wholesome state.

Scientists have been able to categorize prostate cancer to five unique forms, a finding that has been known as a game-changer by researchers. The results of the research published in the Journal of EBioMedicine may very well have a substantial effect on how the disease is treated in the future because physicians may now have the ability to tell which kind of tumors a patient may have, and how sharply or slowly they may grow.

In effect, this new information could result in a more “tumor-specific” therapy, tailored to the patient’s particular condition.

Before, all prostate cancers was lumped into one category. This has resulted in a certain amount of inconsistency in the effectiveness of prostate cancer remedies since there could be a varied quantity of responses from any given patient.

According to Malcom Mason, a Professor from Cancer Research UK, one of the principal reasons that prostate cancer can be hard to treat is because of being not able to evaluate it’s expansion rate. Up until now, there has not been a reliable way to differentiate aggressive, fast-growing cancers in the slower-growing forms (which may not even cause problems in the individual’s life).

He states that this results in certain guys not getting treatment that’s intensive enough, although other men could be getting treatment that’s overly aggressive, causing unnecessary side effects.

The findings presented in this study could be game-changing if the exact results are replicated in larger clinical trials. Professor Mason states that this may ultimately save lives and enhance the quality of life for the thousands of men with prostate cancer, by providing more effective treatment for those men who want it.

Among American men, prostate cancer is the most frequent non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of death. The American Cancer Society estimates that there’ll be over 220,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed and more than 27,000 deaths because of the disease in the past years.

Recent studies have revealed that the management of prostate cancer has really improved, and that physicians have used more of a “watch and wait” approach, as opposed to more aggressive prostate treatments (such as surgery).

Though this disease has impacted countless men and their families, treatment options are becoming more effective now than at any other time. The most recent figures provided by the American Cancer Society show that the 5-year survival rate for all diagnosed cases of prostate cancer is near 100 percent, whereas the 10- and 15- year survival rates are still well over 90%.

  1. Information read. I now know what to look for in a supplement and which is best for prostate health. I also had no idea how important this was for me. I am a father of 2 and I want to be healthy and live a long life for them. I don’t want to get ill and have the need for them to feel they have to care for me.

  2. This article was helpful for me. I am new to looking after myself. After a health scare last year, I have been doing my best to live as healthy as I can. I am not getting any younger! I am 51 and I plan to see another 40 years of healthy living and I know prostate health is a big one for men.

  3. Aside from supplements, what are your thoughts on prostate massage? I was reading up on that and it is said to be very good along side a good diet and a supplement program. Is it worth looking into anymore or is supplementing enough to keep me healthy?

  4. My dad had some serious prostate trouble and I’m scared as fuck I will be there someday… I have regular checkups but I still feel I have to take extra precautions and start taking a supplement or something.

    • Regular checkups are the best way to go and any supplement is probably useful in decreasing the risk but talking to a doctor is always the right thing to do.

  5. This is a very uncomfortable issue for my husband and he keeps posting his checkup. He’ll be 57 in June so he’s long overdue but there’s no way I can convince him to go.

    • My Bill is the same. We don’t have any prostate related health issues in our families so he just says no whenever I schedule an appointment. I’m seriously thinking of bombarding him with videos and really scary articles until he caves in and checks it out.

  6. This was the push I needed. Since I didn’t have any problems I never really thought about this seriously but I can’t postpone it indefinitely.
