Running is a type of exercise that is often undermined in terms of its seriousness. Many people think that running is as straightforward as simply throwing on the first pair of sweatpants, eating a Snickers protein bar, lacing up their shoes and sprinting off into the sunset. But in reality, there are many more aspects of running that need to be taken into consideration.

Running can be a completely different experience from one person to another, depending upon the intensity of the training that they do, the style of running that they participate in, and what they wish to achieve from running. That said, regardless of the specific circumstances, there are several things to consider that typically affect all runners. Some relate to common sense and safety measures, whereas others revolve around things to consider during the activity.

To help you consider the aspects of running that you may have overlooked, we’ve included a checklist of things that all runners need to know below.

Running is important, but so are other areas of your health

If you want to optimize your performance as a runner, there is more to this activity than simply increasing the duration and intensity of your runs. Those who perform well on the track and whom are able to improve their stamina and run speed time and again are usually those who also focus on other areas of exercise – for example, they participate in weight lifting exercises in order to build upon their overall strength. In order to succeed and continually improve your performance as a runner, make sure that you take an overall approach to your workout – engage in supplementary activities, rest and allow your body time to recover after long sessions, get sufficient sleep each day and eat healthily.

Investing in proper shoes and attire is important

There’s an old saying that states that a workman is only as good as his tools and that can be applied here in the instance of a runner and their equipment. Though this is often an overlooked aspect of preparing a running routine, investing in high quality attire and footwear is imperative in protecting the runner against injuries and small irritations such as blisters and bunions.

Invest in apparel that is lightweight and breathable, and therefore feels comfortable during long runs and allows you to perspire. You should also consider purchasing some reflective gear so that if you decide to embark on runs during the evenings and night times, you will be visible to cars.

When it comes to footwear, ensure that you have a quality shoes which offers ample support. The shoes that you purchase should hold your feet snug within them yet without being too tight. Proper running attire can be expensive, however it is absolutely possible to purchase items that are of a good quality without breaking the bank. Items produced by reputable brands such as Nike and Adidas guarantee quality. Investing in quality running wear also ensures durability, and items that are not going to fall apart after just a handful of uses.

Remember to stay safe

There are several measures that you should strive to follow as a runner as a rule of thumb – particularly if you are running in urban environments. When running along roadsides in towns and cities, always aim to run in the opposite direction of the traffic so that you can be sure the card will see you. Hover here for more info.

Try to stay at the innermost side of the pavement and away from the road as much as possible. Similarly, be aware of your surroundings at all times – be mindful of where you are running if it is somewhat secluded, and if listening to music, try to keep it at a volume where you can hear things around you or at least aim to keep one ear free from wireless workout headphones.

Consider buddying up

Finding a running partner to workout with or joining a training group is a great way to stay motivated in your running goals since you can all offer each other practical advice and moral support.

When looking for a training group, try to identify one whereby the runners within it are of similar pace and fitness level to you, or are training for the same thing (ie a specific marathon).

Challenge yourself!

When you first start running, it’s important to manage your expectations and understand they you cannot simply go from couch potato to Olympic athlete standard overnight. You need to take it slow in the beginning and then gradually push yourself further. That said, there is no harm in pushing yourself as you embark on your journey. You can consider signing up to races and tournaments in your area. You don’t need to get competitive with this (unless you want to!), Instead you can see the races as s personal challenge to see how far you’ve progressed.
